Basically affiliate marketing is a practice in which an online merchant rewards you, the affiliate, for sending customers to their website. Let say that you have a website where you blog about your favorite fuzzy pink nosewarmers. Those nosewarmers, made by Nosy's Warmers, can be purchased online at nosewarmers.com. If Nosey's Warmers takes part in an Affiliate Marketing Program or Network, then they will pay you some percentage of every sale that they make, when the purchaser is referred to their website from yours. It's basically a referral bonus or a finder's fee.
Not every merchant has an affiliate marketing program, some manage their own programs, and some are members of Affiliate Marketing Networks such as ShareaSale, Commission Junction, or ClickBank. When a merchant is a member of a network, that means that all of the members of that network have access to their affiliate program. To go back to our example of Nosey's Warmers, they might be an advertiser on ShareAClickJunction Affiliates. In that case, if you are a publisher/affiliate member of ShareAClickJunction then you would have access to Nosey's Warmers Affiliate Program as well as all of the other advertisers on the ShareAClickJunction Network.
Regardless of whether the Affiliate Program is part of a network or managed by the vendor, the basic unit of Affiliate Marketing is the Affiliate Link. This is a specially coded HTML link that identifies what site the purchaser was referred by. For instance, our affiliate link to ShareaSale.com is:
Join shareasale.com, Earn Cash!
Anyone who clicks on that link, and then joins the ShareaSale network, will be identified as coming from this site, and we'll get credit for it. (So please click the link and spend lots of money with shareasale:)
That's Affiliate Marketing in a nutshell, in the future we'll be reviewing some of the bigger Affiliate Networks and examining some strategies for actually making a little money using Affiliate Marketing.
Stay Tuned!
